Marilyn and Angie operated the Heart-to-Heart International medical trailer. It was cool, even cold, and it had that antiseptic smell so common in any doctor’s office. Everything was white, labeled, and very clean. Marilyn welcomed us inside as we explained our want for tetanus shots. "We’ll take care of you," said Marilyn with a caring bedside manner, "just fill out these forms. Who’s first?" Janet and I looked at each other, and waited for the other to speak. Men and women are equals, with perhaps the exception of cleaning up nasty messes, dealing with mice and spiders, and volunteering to go first for unpleasant things. I volunteered.

When I’m about to get a shot, I start making conversation, anything to distract myself from the impending sting and cold sinking-in of the needle. Angie, reassuring me from the other side of the trailer, says: "Don’t worry, you won’t feel a thing," but I’m still anxious. Everyone says not to worry. Everyone says a little white lie to relax you so they can find a vein without dealing with your squirming around. But it’s still going to hurt. In fact, it’s going to hurt just as much as it wou– "All done!" says Marilyn. Huh? "How did you do that?" I ask Marilyn, looking at my shoulder. I was convinced she hadn’t given me the shot yet. "You’re good!" Pleasantly shocked, I tell Janet she’s got nothing to worry about as she hands Spot to me and takes her turn by the window. As Marilyn rubs alcohol on Janet’s shoulder, Spot, sitting in my lap, licks my face, right on my lips. I wonder if Spot’s had his shots, too.

Feeling safe to work, we return to the bank and begin the most tedious job yet.

Writing a How-To article? If you?re writing computer instructions in Microsoft Word it’s helpful to show screen shots. Here’s how.

Turn on your computer and launch the program or website you want to use to illustrate your article.

Launch Microsoft Word and open a document.

Decide whether you want to show your entire desktop as well as the active screen, or just the screen. Both are possible.

To take a shot of just the active screen, hold down the ALT key and tap PrtScn. The shot is in your buffer.
To take a shot of your entire desktop, hold down the CTRL key and tap PrtScn. The shot is in your butter.

To move the shot out of your buffer into the word processing document, place your cursor in the document where you want the shot to appear. Press down the CTRL key and tap V. This will paste the screen shot into your

Do you or someone else in your family have a fear of shots? It?s natural to be apprehensive about having a needle stuck in your arm, and, not surprisingly, kids are especially prone to injection anxiety. On the positive side, there are some simple things you can do to make a shot less painful for you and the kids.

Make a Painful Shot Hurt Less by Coughing

To make a painful injection less painful, cough just before the needle is inserted and again as the needle enters the muscle. This pain-reducing method was tested on 68 kids in a study published in the journal Pediatrics ? and it works. It?s a simple technique kids and parents with a fear of shots can use when it?s time to get an injection.

Have Them Warm the Injection

According to a study published in Annals of Emergency Medicine, warming the contents of the solution to be injected to room temperature reduces the pain of an injection. In this study, injections were warmed in a warming tray, water bath or incubator. But doctors can warm an injection simply by rolling it between their hands for a few minutes. Even better, ask them to warm it up in a warming tray.

Harness the Power of EMLA for Painful Shots

EMLA is a topical agent used for numbing the skin. To make a painful injection more bearable, ask for a prescription for EMLA to use before an injection, or ask the pharmacist to give you 4% lidocaine cream to take home. Apply it 60 to 90 minutes before a painful shot to anesthetize the area. If you don?t have numbing cream, apply an ice pack to the area a few minutes before the injection.

Learn Relaxation Techniques

The anticipation of a painful shot is usually worse than the injection itself. Don?t fixate on what?s to come. Instead, meditate, listen to new age music or do deep breathing exercises before a shot ? and choose the right doctor?s office. If the personnel are uptight, in a hurry or intolerant of your anxiety about getting an injection, find another doctor. Insensitive medical personnel will only make your fear of shots worse.
